The Making of...Estelle Hits Grammy Carpet in Love Collins

About 10 days before the Grammy's my good friend and celebrity stylist, Genelle Brooks texted me. Wanting to know if I was available to meet with her and Grammy Award winning singer Estelle. She had a dress of her grandmother's that she wanted re-designed to possibly wear to one of the weekends many events.

The sketch options for the re-design.

I love taking vintage, especially sentimental pieces giving them a new life. She knew she wanted to add in a
contrasting fabric and use cobalt blue to ease the vibrant print. I hope we made granny proud!!!

Seeing the opportunity at hand, for our initial meeting I packed the dress I was currently working on, which later became her red carpet look. With the design, pattern, and construction 80% completed the only thing missing was the perfect shape and personality to pull it off.

I showed the piece and Estelle was game to try it on. I pinned to her tiny shapely frame, she was stoked. With no commitment to wearing my design, I took note of her measurements, we continued our planning for her grandmothers dress and finished our consultation.

In my mind I was determined to finish this dress and the one she ordered to have in time for the Grammys. By the end of our first fitting she was convinced this would be her red carpet look. With not one single request to change my original design. I paused thinking, "Did I hear that correctly? My dress at the Grammys. On the red carpet. Whoa!! Keep pinning girl". I left the fitting on a high. She was excited, comfortable, and pleased. Genelle and I gave each other a quick eye and smile to confirm. In the car Genelle sends a text saying "thanks for coming and glad Estelle is excited". Me too!

The dress turned out phenomenal. The bias cut was meticulously fitted to accentuate every curve and angle.  She wore it with such pride and elegance. The fact that the dress and Estelle have garnered so much media praise is a bonus. Best Dressed Lists, WHAT!!!!! As a designer, and one that is relatively known in a small fashion circle this is pretty major. My cup runneth over. I've said it many times before but again Genelle thank you for always thinking of me. Estelle thank you for wearing my design with such grace. You shined on the carpet.

Totally Obsesed xoxo

Love Collins

Check out more pics of my design process below. NOTE: These dresses were designed and made by Love Collins Custom Clothier, All designs and construction are the sole vision of Love Collins. This was not a collaborative effort.

This fabric found me. The bold orange on the seductive navy background was perfect for an event like the Grammy's.
Covered buttoons is one of my favorite details. it always elegant and is a nod to femininity.
Anyone with pattern and sewing capabilities understands the whoa's of cutting delicate fabric on bias.
Aside from sketching, putting my label in a garment is one of my favorite components of my design process. Not only does it mark the completion of the item, but its a constant reminder of my journey. This is the time I usually start to pray blessings over the wearer, and thank God for giving them same grace that He has given to me.
Now this is the hardest part, giving it away. Its like giving birth... well maybe not, but you get the idea.
