“Black Designers, such as Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton, Olivier Rousteing for Balmain, and even the overdue collaboration of Harlem’s Dapper Dan with Gucci, are receiving promotions within luxury brands as head designers”. But designers who have their eyes and talents focused on competing in this market continue to hit a glass ceiling due to a lack of funding and interests from investors.
“It is another form of appropriation’, says Collins. “We still make up a large buying margin of these brands and the response isn’t investing in the creators instead its hire them. I believe in both avenues, but if our community shifted its dollars and street promotion toward black owned fashion companies we in turn create the demand ourselves.
